Paul Budak has a deep and broad background in investing, technology, entrepreneurship and operational management. From developing machine vision applications for healthcare to operating a social media management company, his passion has been to help companies apply cutting edge technology to solve complex problems in significant markets.
Paul’s insights come from a unique set of experiences including direct, hands-on venture capital investing, angel investing, buy and sell side M&A, operational management, executive leadership, and board level direction at numerous startup and growth stage companies.
Paul has invested in technology based companies since the early 2000’s as a Partner at Encompass Ventures of Seattle, Washington and as an angel investor in Chicago. He has held C-level positions in eight companies. He also founded two startups and was a senior level engineer at 5 companies.
Paul’s experience as an entrepreneur has allowed him to give back to the startup community by mentoring and helping early stage companies. His ability to empathize with entrepreneurs is what makes him an effective and trusted advisor.
Paul currently serves as an advisory board member on the Cornell School of Hotel Administration Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship and is also Chairman of the board for Fishidy, Inc. of Madison, WI. In addition to being an Entrepreneur-In-Residence at Illinois Ventures, Paul is a member of the Chicago Innovation Mentors – a mentorship program supporting commercialization opportunities at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the iBIO Institute, and Argonne Laboratory.
Paul holds bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington.
